Avan Ivan — Avane thaan Ivan

Name the film directed by Bala which has 2 jobless dirty heroes, 1 with a strange get-up and another one with lots of sense of humour (!!), 2 neat heroines, a hill town, weak police/forest dept officers, dirty comedy, filler scenes, different smuggling, thiruvizha song, aggressive dances, nerve-wracking fights and a gory climax ?

If you say Pithamagan, you could be wrong because it is completely applicable for Avan Ivan too. So how do we differentiate ? By changing the music director, dialog writer and mainly artists – so that we forget whatever we have seen in Pithamagan :). In my opinion, Pithamagan was Bala’s best in terms of completeness [ characters, songs, climax and the plot ]. Avan ivan is an utter effortless product which Bala thinks very high of himself. He has a reason too for the same since Manirathnam said in Naan Kadavull audio launch that he came there as a fan of Bala.

    Story

Director decided not to burden the viewers with story so it happens on its own way. Let’s shoot and give sleepless nights for Suresh urs.

The only good thing came out of this film is Vishal’s performance and a fierce dance in his introduction scene. It resembled the rhythms which I enjoy in the festival processions of Bangalore, which engage the possible types of drums.

The advantage of having 2 heroes subject is one can have 2 introductions, 2 dances, 2 heroine introductions, 2 family or character descriptions, comedy portions, a quick action sequence to plant a mystery and by the time showing theses scenes you’ll get the interval card. So an action sequence is very much-needed before that. It’s pathetic to see a group of policemen/ forest officers weakly portrayed and severely beaten up by the main characters.

So what happens after interval. We need performance and the saddest part is vishal is asked to perform navarasam in a stage – so everyone weeps out of his performance. It’s like asking a comedy actor to do stand-up comedy and say the comedy scene is excellent — even a fight has to happen along with the story. Meanwhile [ in this cycle gap ! ] ‘actor’ Surya does some Agaram marketing  [ Similarly we can have Aids foundation, polio drops campaign whenever we run out of scenes !! ].  As committed, 2nd hero also has his performance sequence again. Some more romance and it’s disgusting to see Tamil heroine characters fall easily in love !!.

You must be thinking of the villain – not an issue. Bala introduces a quick and instant villain who does some illicit trading with a scar in his face and less dialogues – why ? because he is the villain !! Any common man can’t accept a character coming at the end of the movie claiming he is the villain — a basic thing ‘Vaadhyaar’ says  in his Thiraikadhai book. The heroes group get a friction with illicit trading [ remember they are thieves ! ] and we have a character artist roaming with them aimlessly [ pathetic performance by GM Kumar ]. So Bala comes into picture now.. we need violence, shocking sequences so that viewers bow down on what shown on-screen. He does his part and the gala climax happens with an ultimate fight. I haven’t told the story because there’s no story in this narration. Everything just happens.

The dialogues are written by S.Ra. I’m damn sure that he’ll not write a single word about this movie and he’ll flow as usual with some Vietnamese or Tunisian movie which he’ll claim that’s the best in film industry. But when it comes to his contribution he writes junk dialogues in movies like album, sandai kozhi,Baba, avan-ivan etc.,

I can’t blame Yuvan because he can do wonders if the film really needs his presence [ Pudhupettai, Aaranya kaandam ] and he does what he can for this film. Neither the songs nor the BGM reaches you. It’s a light movie ad you need to take it light.

Bala needs to change everything what he does now and come up with another story which we never heard of. Severe economical failures/loss alone can teach lessons to creators like Bala. The above photo is meaning ful. This film is one more Dhrishti for Bala :)

     -Toto.

    1. Excellent.

While watching this film, we were discussing that Bala has become just like music director Deva (Who has a penchant to re-make his own songs/tunes).

By the way, welcome back after a very long hiatus. At least to make you blog, Bala has to make films like this.

    2. Glad to see your encouraging comments, Viswa. Even Harris Jeyaraj can be compared :) . Thanks for your support.
