Rare in air — SPB SJ

Greetings. I’m not going to praise about the known songs which everyone of us might have praised at least 100 times at various instances in life. So, this is not going to be about the songs like Germaniyin Senthen malaire, Andhi mazhai, Kanmaniye kadhal enbahu, Paruvame, Nilavaave vaa, pothi vacha malliga mottu range of songs. Also, I wouldn’t torture you with some unknown SPB songs from TRajendar [ Raakala velaiayila] or some Chandrabose songs [ Pattu chattai pottu vandha maina :) ]. Even some exceptions are there in TR songs too [ Thannandhani kaatukulle, Maalai enai vaatudhu ]. Instead, this is going to be about the songs that came as a surprise during a  travel, from FM or in an old CD, or a music channel.

Similar to the varities of the singer’s voice, there are categories of songs based on the reach. For ex in Rajaparvai, Andhi mazhai is more famous than Azhage azhagu, Sandhana kaatre is faous than Raasaave unne naan enni thaan. Idhayam oru kovil compared to paatu thalaivan [ enna paatunga adhu ]. The idea is to recollect a little bit of the songs, which I neither have in my collections nor that i repeatedly listen [ some songs were new to me ! ].

Though I listen to all music directors, I get very nostalgic when I hear these songs. The first reason is that they are attached to school days and the second is that the music also speaks [ yes ! I feel like the violins / cellos / flute talk apart from the lyrics ]. Of course, mostly the lyrics are made up of dummy/filler lyrics [ raathiri yaathirai, aavarem poovu, ] but the effort given by the singers are worth to mention.

Pen maane sangeetham — Naan Sigappu Manidhan

I don’t even know the number of times, that I have watched this movie. The pity about the song is that lyricist is forced to end the words with ‘ne’ [ maane, thene, naane :) ]. A simple but serene song which was just one of the songs from IR those days. Nobody can even think about this kind of simple picturisation — few changes in costumes in a park ]. I never thought that we would run out of good songs in just 2 decades [ ! ].

Oh maane maane — Vellai Roja

I remember that we planned stich a shirt based on the costume of Prabhu from this song [ red square in the upper left part of a collarless shirt ]. One more fast paced piece from SPB with good rhythm. One more shot to be mentioned is that un kannil ennai kanden was shot like static shot [ kittathatta maatu kannula mahavishnu theriyara maadiri irukkum :) ]. The best in this category is a shot from “Uyire” where SRK sees his reflection in Manisha’s eyes [ Nalla velai ;) ].

    Nilavondru Kanden — Keirasikkaran

I still remember the snow mountain’s still poster with Prabhu / Radha with some fur cap [ it was running in Lakshmi theatre, then ]. The other good song is “Kai veesum thamarai” from the same movie.

Nathiyil aadum poovanam — Kadhal Oviyam

There’s a category of drama called Naatiya nadagam and similarly in cinema, there are some films dedicated for songs [ like the Mohan movies ]. Watch out for the extraordinary lyrics of Vairamuthu in this entire album [ villaku vizithu paarkume, poovil vandu koodum ] and the different rendering of SPB & SJ in different pronunciations. Of course, I am allergic to the Gamagam [ sa ni dhapa.. game ] which comes in the interlude. Somehow, VM has used the same poomaram, saamaram rhyming which is a favourite line of Bharathiraja, as told in an interview.

Oru Kadhal enbathu — Chinna thambi Periya thambi

The core song for this blog is this song, which I heard recently and regreted that I didn’t have this in my collections. The first surprise is that this song doesn’t belong to IR — Gangai amaran is the MD for this Manivannan’s film. Watch out for the violins that travel along with the voice in parallel and enrich the song.

    Illa manadhu — Selvi

Another simple song with some junk lyrics. The song looks like pile of cut cloth pieces in a tailor shop. It starts slowly, runs in a rhythm, some chorus comes in between.. still, I like this song. I remember seeing this movie for the adventures of a dog :).

Unnai naan paarkayil — Kannukoru Vannakili

It makes sense when SPB named his kids as Pallavi and Saran[am]. Hats off to his legendary life with 40000 songs over a span of 40 years time.

    Happy listening.

    –Toto.

    3. I have listened to all except the Kannukkoru vannakkili film song.
will listen and share my opinion.

the other songs are pleasant and certainly popular those times.
Did not realise that GA was MD for that film.he had done some decent films but since he was under the shadow of his legendary brother, he did not get the respect he deserved so much. i read somewhere that , even when IR was in his peak, 80% of his songs recordings were handled by GA.
