Kallavaani — Fragrant Frangipani

Though we have multiple genres of cinema, we also sometimes need “no nonsense” cinema without violence, vulgarity, big star cast, unnecessary hype [ mainly Sun pictures :) ] etc., The last “no nonsense” movie was Pasanga in Tamil cinema. The simple purpose of a movie should be engaging the audience and of course, entertaining. This movie does.

The equal characterization of Kallavaani I have seen is Abagnale of “Catch me if you can” — A character which can tell any kind of lie and act according to the situation, in an extreme selfish manner. Such a character is our hero and the story is one another jobless young chap loving a school girl — an avoidable theme :( .

Story

Hero “Arikki” is jobless and gets money from his family which consists of affectionate mother, school going sister and father working in Dubai, dreaming about the family future. Arikki falls in love with Mageswari, a school going girl. Both of their villages have some enmity. What happens in their life is the story.

Fresh ideas and interesting packaging makes a simple story to enjoy the movie. [ Remember, “Thooral ninnu pochu”, Aan paavam ]. The foremost thing is the area where the story happens. Thank God ! It’s not Madurai or Thirunelveli. It’s Thanjavur. It’s very enjoyable when you see the town names where you have been and know the people.. Pattukottai, oratha nadu, mannarkudi and their dialects. Right from the first scene, the director wants to make use the best of the available people, locations and ideas. Small sequences which traps the characters and getting them out of those traps [ like Manohar with Divya calling Chandramouli for a coffee ! ].

After the script, it’s the casting — you have right people in place and it will take up the burden easily. I couldn’t even think of any other hero or heroine doing these roles. Though the movie slightly travels in a slow pace before interval, the gripping climax takes the full credit. I like the way songs are used in this movie. SSKumaran [ MD of Poo ] has done a neat and wonderful job which is very apt to this movie. Short songs and soothing BGM [resembling IR ! ] are his strength areas.

Interesting aspects — uneven shirt button, Bike bar, flex banner, broken items at home, LC112, travels car, hiding in a bus, fertilizer bottle, hijack. I just named a few to avoid spoilers and you can enjoy similar aspects while watching the movie. The complete credit goes to Sarkunam and his team [ Om Prakash, Raja Mohammad ] for making this clean family entertainer, watchable with kids.

Simple n entertaining.

Happy watching

  1. Hello,

Thanks for writing about this movie. I was not aware of this one. It reminds me of the movie Kadhal with simple characters unlike the Suryas and Vijays of the world.

Thanks for writing about this one.

    Thanks

    Venkat

  2. Freeyaa vidunga.. It’s a lighter movie presented neatly.

  3. Many good reviews about this movie, looks like a must see movie. it is really a slap in the face of the mega stars, when such small budget movies steal the hearts of the movie goers. Thanks for the review.

  4. I read positive reviews about this film by almost all reviewers in tamil blogs.
comparisons were made with ‘AAN PAAVAM’. i am glad to see such small budget films are accepted by audience. sad to know that the DMK Family film producers are pressurising theaters to withdraw this successful film to accommodate their new releases. hope this film celebrates 100 days in each theater it is released.i read that Saranja Sr, and the cameraman husband have done a very good job too.
by the way, when will u contribute to such a film with Mys ?

  5. Thanks Krishna.. Mega stars never worry about this.. My latest worry is about Endhiran + Sun TV + their advertisements.. Kadhi kalangudhu„ :(

Thanks Rajan.. Saranya as well as Illavarasu have mastered their areas and the outcome is pleasing, Mys possess the value of reading loads of books and it helps him.I’m definetely not at that level — just a film freak who enjoys watching movies..
