I follow films and music, like a monk ! I value your comments. You can find my tamil poems here. http://roughnot.blogspot.com/ .

    Unsung but outstanding

For all the music directors, I have some numerous songs as favorites and can list them. But for IR, anytime you ask me I can just say only one song — the song I heard lastly :) That’s the beauty of IR. I just live with the last song I heard and consider that as the end of all songs.

Once BBC Sampathkumar said that ARR reserves the best tunes for the first level directors like Manirathnam and sees to that it is picturised at the best [ bad example : Sakkarakatti ]. This is not the case with our IR — He just gave the best [ produced in a day ]  immaterial of whether it is for GNRangarajan or for K.Rangaraj. Both SPBSJ might not have thought that they sing in the wonderful times. Some unsung but incredible songs.

Radha radha — Meendum Kokila; SPB/SJIR.

It was just one another song picturised in Mysore Brindavan or Lalitha palace gardens for a flowing, melody song. Both the singers do the best justification for the song. Watch for the subtle smile of SPB in the middle of the song — neeyoru pakkam. I can’t write anything about the instruments — they are beyond my little blogging skills. At the school days, I worried much about why some star pairs didn’t get marry — one such lead pair was Kamal and Sridevi. [ அப்புற‌ம் எங்க‌ ப‌டிப்பு வெள‌ங்கும் ?! ]

Mayile mayile — Kadavull amaitha medai; SPB/Jensi — IR

Of all the singers, If I feel that I miss one lead singer who sung very less numbers in Tamil, it would be Jensi. By seeing this video, you’ll understand why ARR hides the good tunes from some directors — Sumithra overrules what Meg Ryan does in When Harry met Sally ;). This is one of the songs which I remember in my kindergarten stages [ UKG — it used to come in radio ]. Jensi simply supersedes the voice of SPB with her peculiar voice.

    Vaa ponmayile — Poonthalir; SPBIR

To be honest, I came to know about this song from FM channels, after moving to Chennai. One of the simplest solo songs of SPB. Watch for ‘Kaniye manam mayanga mayanga’ . Without much efforts,  they just shot this song in some travelers bungalow. How simple life was!

Mouname paarvaiyaai — Anbe Sivam; SPB/Chandrayee ; Vidyasagar.

It’s not included in the film Anbe Sivam. It’s the SPB who had withstood all the changes in times and came out in a different dimension with the combination of Vidyasagar. I can recommend this song for anyone learning how to pronounce Tamil words. The credit goes to SPB who makes this normal song to a greater height. The song travels with different backgrounds without any change in the voices. The female singer is Chandrayee. Kamal personally regretted that he couldn’t fit this song in the film.

As susually said, these are just some random gems that I come across.  Instead of hearing in stress management classes at a later day, let us hear them in the little time, which we have for self, these days.

    1. You should add the song ‘Ponaaram Poovaaram…’ to this list. Another great song by SPB.
      வார்த்தைகள் எல்லாம் ரொம்ப தெளிவா இருக்கும் எந்த பாட்ல.

Thanks for posting the YouTube URL links. But stil I minimized the window and continued to listen to the songs. This way I cherish my Radio/Transistor memories and more over I am not sure about the quality of the picturization of the songs.

    2. Thanks Srikanth. True.. Ponnaram is also one such gem. It’s better to hear the old songs. I like “KanmaniyE kadhal enbadhu” song very much and when I happened to see that on screen, I was extremely shocked. I never tried to ‘watch’ that song again. :)

    3. Regarding this ‘anbae sivam” film song, SPB was upset with Kamal because he cut that sons from the film. in fact, in an interview during the launch of Kamal’s “unnai pol oruvan” and his 50th anniversary in Films, SPB spoke to kamal on Live TV and sought his clarification for cutting off the song. Kamal was embarrassed and blamed it on his coterie, saying his advisors felt the song’s tempo was slow and would drag the film. he felt really bad that SPB’s very good effort was wasted…

All songs recommended by u r very simple and sweet. keep up ur good work..

    4. Thanks Rajan.. It happens in films, occassionally. The recent example is Maalai Neram from Aayirathil oruvan..
