Which one do you think is more delight­ful to do? Spend­ing an evening in beach, watch­ing movies, lis­ten­ing to songs, drinking/eating a pleas­ant item, trav­el­ling on the river­side, vis­it­ing an old n less crowded tem­ple, read­ing a book. They all are mean­ing­ful only when they are shared with some­one else. When you come across a per­son who has a sim­i­lar taste, that’s the delight­ful moment. I am quite famil­iar with these moments. This time with an unknown per­son. He is Sam­pathku­mar of BBC Thamizhosai.

In Tamil film music, there are mil­lions of songs in dif­fer­ent gen­res and every­one has their own set of tastes. In my knowl­edge, Tamil film indus­try posess a very unique and rich her­itage in film music as well as com­edy artists. Com­edy artists range from Kali N Rath­nam to Lollu sabha Manohar — every one has their own style. Sim­i­larly the film music her­itage — Music direc­tors, Singers, music artists, lyri­cists. A true fan will not get into a sim­ple fight between 2 artists or com­par­ing them [ actors, music direc­tors for that mat­ter ] . No. Instead he enjoys the prod­uct right from G.Ramanathan to GVPrakash — inde­pen­dent of the artists. We need the help of our seniors to get to know the black and white days of film music. Film crit­ics are plenty — every film goer is a critic [ includ­ing pix­monk :) ] but film his­to­ri­ans are very handful.

Ran­dor guy [ Ramadu­rai ! ], Film news Anand­han, Rani Mainthan, Vaa­manan, Aran­thai Narayanan, Muk­tha Srini­vasan. Long back, I was intro­duced to BBC Thamizho­sai “Paa­ton­dru Ket­ten” series by Venkat. I was reluc­tant those days to explore the depth of that pro­gram. Of late, for read­ing about IR, I ended up with lis­ten­ing to the 75 episodes of “Paa­ton­dru kEt­ten” pro­gram pro­duced and hosted by BBC Thamizho­sai Sam­pathku­mar. I can relate my very lit­tle film music enthu­si­asm to his greater spec­trum of pas­sion in tamil film music. He has the infor­ma­tion start­ing from Bha­ga­vathar to GV Prakashku­mar. More­over, he is pas­sion­ate about the sub­ject — He doesn’t com­pare any artists and instead he enjoys the moments shar­ing about one par­tic­u­lar artist at a time. Let it be PBS, AM Raja, Chan­dra babu, Sirgazi — Bril­liantly cap­tured tastes.

It’s a treat to lis­ten the descrip­tions shared by Sam­pathku­mar. Only a true n pas­sion­ate per­son can do this job. For exam­ple, while talk­ing about Sirkazi Govin­dara­jan, he adds

” த‌மிழ்ச்சொற்க‌ளின் அழ‌கும், க‌ம்பீர‌மும், இனிமையும் சீர்காழி கோவிந்த‌ராஜ‌னின் குர‌லில் எல்லைய‌ற்ற‌ பேரெழிலை, மெருகை பெறுகின்ற‌ன‌ ”

It can­not be expressed by a nor­mal reporter but a true music fan who enjoyed the bound­aries of that voice only can nar­rate those words. Not only for Sirgazi.. he enjoys describ­ing the best right from Bha­ga­vathar to Jikki. It’s pleas­ant to know about the past his­tory of tamil fim music. I rec­ol­lect the ini­tial fore­word of K.Viswanath in Sankarab­ha­ranam “aa rasagan­gaani anthugo­danikki mim­malni man­asaaraa aak­van­ish­tun­nam..” [ Heartily request­ing you all to enjoy the good­ness of the music ]. I would like to use his lines.
