Paatondru Ketten
Which one do you think is more delightful to do? Spending an evening in beach, watching movies, listening to songs, drinking/eating a pleasant item, travelling on the riverside, visiting an old n less crowded temple, reading a book. They all are meaningful only when they are shared with someone else. When you come across a person who has a similar taste, that’s the delightful moment. I am quite familiar with these moments. This time with an unknown person. He is Sampathkumar of BBC Thamizhosai.
In Tamil film music, there are millions of songs in different genres and everyone has their own set of tastes. In my knowledge, Tamil film industry posess a very unique and rich heritage in film music as well as comedy artists. Comedy artists range from Kali N Rathnam to Lollu sabha Manohar — every one has their own style. Similarly the film music heritage — Music directors, Singers, music artists, lyricists. A true fan will not get into a simple fight between 2 artists or comparing them [ actors, music directors for that matter ] . No. Instead he enjoys the product right from G.Ramanathan to GVPrakash — independent of the artists. We need the help of our seniors to get to know the black and white days of film music. Film critics are plenty — every film goer is a critic [ including pixmonk :) ] but film historians are very handful.
Randor guy [ Ramadurai ! ], Film news Anandhan, Rani Mainthan, Vaamanan, Aranthai Narayanan, Muktha Srinivasan. Long back, I was introduced to BBC Thamizhosai “Paatondru Ketten” series by Venkat. I was reluctant those days to explore the depth of that program. Of late, for reading about IR, I ended up with listening to the 75 episodes of “Paatondru kEtten” program produced and hosted by BBC Thamizhosai Sampathkumar. I can relate my very little film music enthusiasm to his greater spectrum of passion in tamil film music. He has the information starting from Bhagavathar to GV Prakashkumar. Moreover, he is passionate about the subject — He doesn’t compare any artists and instead he enjoys the moments sharing about one particular artist at a time. Let it be PBS, AM Raja, Chandra babu, Sirgazi — Brilliantly captured tastes.
It’s a treat to listen the descriptions shared by Sampathkumar. Only a true n passionate person can do this job. For example, while talking about Sirkazi Govindarajan, he adds
” தமிழ்ச்சொற்களின் அழகும், கம்பீரமும், இனிமையும் சீர்காழி கோவிந்தராஜனின் குரலில் எல்லையற்ற பேரெழிலை, மெருகை பெறுகின்றன ”
It cannot be expressed by a normal reporter but a true music fan who enjoyed the boundaries of that voice only can narrate those words. Not only for Sirgazi.. he enjoys describing the best right from Bhagavathar to Jikki. It’s pleasant to know about the past history of tamil fim music. I recollect the initial foreword of K.Viswanath in Sankarabharanam “aa rasagangaani anthugodanikki mimmalni manasaaraa aakvanishtunnam..” [ Heartily requesting you all to enjoy the goodness of the music ]. I would like to use his lines.
Listen to the complete series here.

Coming to present, try listening to Vinnaithaandi varuvaayaa
1. Omana penne — Benny Dayal, Kalyani menon
2. Mannipaaya — ARR, Shreya Goshal
Looks like Thamarai underplayed this time with normal lyrics. The only line I found was
காற்றில்.. அசைகிறதுன் சேலை !
விடிகிறதென் காலை !
You know what ???!!!! With purely your continuous support and encouragement..
–Toto.

Congrats for reaching this milestone.
Krishna had converted all the 75 episodes from Real media format to MP3 format. I copied that from him when I came to India last time. I listened to that when I was commuting to office and back. What else you need while driving a car?
As you said, it does not matter who the MD is — as long as the song is good. For example, Chalapathi Rao (Anjali Devi’s husband) is also a MD and he has given very good songs like.
மயக்கும் மாலை பொழுதே நீ போ போ இனிக்கும் இன்ப இரவே நீ வா
கண்ணாலே பேசி பேசி கொல்லாதே
Thanks
Venkat
Thanks you so much Venkat. You are right. The program has more information about the rare MDs and artists. It’s more of a reference of Tamil film music.
Sorry. Anajli Devi’s husbad is MD P Adhi Narayana Rao and not Chalapathi Rao.
Chalapathi Rao scored music for movie Meenda Sorgam — Thuyiladha Penn Ondru and Kalayae En Vazhakaiyai…
