    To emulate a singing bird

This is neither a follow-up post for Aayirathil oruvan movie nor the review of “To Kill a mocking bird “. Don’t worry :) .

I am grateful to FM Radio for the song which I listened, today morning. All songs are attached with some personal memories and some random thoughts. A single song can evoke different thoughts and similar songs that came in so far [ at least to our limited knowledge ]. Let’s see what is this about.

A singer singing in changed voice is not at all new to Tamil film music. It started earlier with MSRajeswari singing in a kid’s voice [ Kozhi oru kootile ], SJanaki singing artificially in a kid’s [ Daddy Daddy — Kashtamappa !! ], SPB in rough voice [ Aariro aareero — Indiran Chandiran ]. Interestingly, KJY has managed to sing in the same voice without much intentional change — maximum he has done some different songs from his regular melody area like — Vacha paarvai theeradhadi,  Kaana karanguyile kacheri vaikaporen.

The interesting person in this genre is Malaysia Vasudevan. His first song itself happened to be in changed voice — Aatukutti muttaiyittu. To my limited knowledge, he has done the maximum number of songs in changed voices [ ignoring the variety done by SPB ] — aahaan vandhuruchi, aasai kiliye barla barla, maaman voodu machu voodu, Singinaa singi adi, Madana moha roopa sundari in Trichy loganathan’s voice, Suga raagame — in CSJayaraman voice, en soga kathaiyai kelu, .. Of course, this post is not about the variations rendered by MV. Otherwise, it is about a song which Mano has sung !

    Song : Aayirathil naan oruvan [ 1997 ]
    Singer : Mano
    Film : Iruvar
    MDARR

The idea of the song is to express the essence of self confidence n communism related songs used by the legend MGR, in ARR’s music and picturised in Manirathnam style [ desert and Ghagra choli :) ]. They were very clear not to imitate any old song [ remix torture ! ] but only the picturisation and the wordings. Vairamuthu being worked in the film Iruvar [ shared dialogues[poems] along with Suhasini ], knew what words to use for MGR song. Ezhai, Dharmam, Puratchi, viyarvai ezunyaayiru, kathir, thlaivan, malai, kadal, uzhaippu.

They carefully chosen Mano [ avoided others like original TMS himslef ] to sing like TMS [ emulate basically and definitely not to mock ]. Hence it didn’t turn up as a spoof by Mano but use the intonations exactly as TMS pronounces [ Kunindha ullam, pazhaiya pagai ]. That’s a memorable number from Mano. The picturisation credit goes to Santhosh Sivan and dance master Brinda.

The film had another wonderful song — Narumugaiye where Bombay Jayashree made her debut in film music and the poem “Unnodu naan irundha ovvoru” using Aravindswamy’s voice and a simple humming. In fact, the film itself needs ample time to enjoy n share about. Iruvar, Nayakan, Na.Muthukumar, IR/ARR songs — I can’t capture them in one single effort. Instead, I share a part of them as I recollect.

I like these lines very much.

    Happy listening.

    1. Another interesting song பூக்கொடியின் புன்னகை … and interesting lyrics as follows

What a beautiful lines expressing surrender and belief

      –Srikanth

    2. Thanks Srikanth for the comments and the lines. The singer was Sandhya [ daughter-in-law of P Suseela ] and brought the same effect of PS in this song.

    4. ந‌ல்ல‌ வேளை :) I didn’t write much about Manirathnam’s style of moving the story through the song. That’s the effect of people like BBC Thamizhosai Sampathkumar, Randor guy, Vaamanan, Theodre Bhaskaran etc.,

    5. Sandhya — Daughter-in-law of P. Suseela. That’s an interesting piece of information.
We can easily relate a daughter making a performance like her mother but a daughter-in-law performing like her mother-in-law is something different.

    6. Srikanth.. one more titbit :) .. Sandhya is PSusheela’s niece first [ younger brother’s daughter ] and became her daughter-in-law . PS’s only son Jayakrishna married Sandhya.. :)
