Auto..biography

Autorickshawvum Entreprenurshipum

The critical ingredient is getting off and doing something. It’s as simple as that. A lot of people have ideas, but there are few who decide to do something about them now. Not tomorrow. Not next week. But today. The true entrepreneur is a doer, not a dreamer                 - Nolan Bushnell.

On a cloudy day, I engaged an auto to reach Adyar. Unusually, this driver has agreed for a reasonable fare which I had in mind [ mine is Rs.10 per KM ]. Here is the interesting conversation I had.

” Sir.. What is this huge building ?”

” It’s an IT park, where software companies are located.”

” Do all the BE graduates work there?”

” Not all but the best of them. Toppers basically. ”

” Having education is always great, Sir.”

” True. [ To console his profession ] not all graduates are doing well. A cab driver earns more than an Engineer, I know.”

” No Sir.. The money doesn’t matter. Money can be earned in many ways but the one earned through education is the best and dignified.”

” May be.. What did you do initially? ”

” I did my +2 sir and had been to Singapore.”

 ” as what ?”

” Driver, obviously. I drive heavy vehicles too. Had a great time there in Singapore for 4 years.”

” then why did you .. [ run an auto ?! ] come back here?”

” For marriage.. I belong from Orathanadu.. Do you know?”

” Yes.. I know that place.. Closer to Pattukottai.”

” Great! I bought a piece of land, built a house and also some agriculture land. I was into political work also.”

” Really! What do you do?”

” Assisting the councilor.. We get good money in relief money or money during elections. :)”

 ” Good”

” Why you didn’t go back?”

” My cousin was about to sell his tirumala milk distribution here in Chennai and I took over it by paying him.”

 ” then ?”

” I get up at 4 AM and distribute Tirumala milk to the areas adjacent to Egmore and Central. After 10, I use this auto to roam around for rental trips and I return back to milk shop at 6.”

 ” Are u doing this alone? ”

” No sir.. My nephew is helping me. ”

 ” Kids ”

” yes..2 sons. They are studying in hometown.”

 ” What’s interesting about milk distribution ?”

“Ha..ha.. You know sir.. It was 700 litres per day when I joined this business. I made it 1200 litres per day now. It was 70 paise per packet then and 1 Re now, as I crossed 1000 litres a day. The daily incentive is 1000+ per day.”

!!!

” You know.. I got some incentive award too from Tirumala company. Tea shops prefer Tirumala than Aaavin, Sir. ”

 ” ok”

” In the evening, I sell a little amount of Aavin milk too. ”

 ” Mela..”

“Business is doing good, sir.. Soon I’ll make my niece to take over the business and I’ll go back to Orathanadu sir.”

This is not about this person’s success in diverse fields and locations. It’s the oppurtunities that he has tapped and used them, efficiently.

I remember asking one of my senior colleague an interesting question. He has enough education, experience, knowledge and money to try out things in life. He is capable by all means. So, I asked him about starting his own venture. You know what he said

  ”  It’s unnecessary risk, Boss !!”
