Knowing Unknowingly

knw2

As long as we don’t know the next sequence, it’ll be interesting to read, hear, watch and even live life :). Think about the audiences who happened to watch the following movies, very early without knowing about the story — The usual suspects, Parthiban kanavu[2003], Inside man, Hitchcock films, Children of heaven, Adhe Kangall, Inglorious Basterds [ sweet shock !  ] etc.

Especially in thrillers, it is very interesting to anticipate about the happening in the story — that’s where the entire effort goes — like the movies Signs, Predator [ thermal image ], Eeram. The other part is to make the audience not to raise any questions, at least while watching or reading the movie because once we finish reading or watching, we would become critics to whack the product into pieces :)

Though I am not a fan of science fiction movies, I like them told with an appropriate proportion mixed with fiction [resembling the Vivek’s book title :) ]. Also I don’t like Nicholas Cage [ even I watched FACE OFF for John Travolta — Vaseegara Villain ]. That’s why I hesitated to check this movie when Madhan had suggested this movie.

 Plot

A disturbed school girl [ hearing voices in the head ] draws something about the future. This is collected as part of the school’s notable event where they collect the drawings and put it in a time capsule. They take out the same after 50 years and it reaches another boy and his father. The drawing contains sequences of numbers and nothing else. His father John [ Science professor in MIT ] is attracted towards it and finds a pattern out of the numerals. What do they mean and what follows are the interesting elements of the story.

The fiction should be understandable to the common audience along with science explained in it [sometimes philosophy too]. Involving more astronomy may keep the audience away from the story. This story is gripping just because of the human inability to the events. The protagonist is an unusual hero, who doesn’t know to inject a virus program to solar system or cut the red/green wire in a nuclear bomb  :) and save the little blue planet. I liked his theory about determinism and randomness. He says life is made up of accidental events and he sees no purpose to any of our happenings. I understand that the movie is filled up with symbols related to Christianity, atheism, GOD and the bible. However, I am fascinated more towards the movie making and the ways the story is narrated to the viewer, grippingly.

The titling sequence is brilliantly captured from an aerial shot — almost, it starts at a ‘Pale Blue Dot’ range [ Thanks to Krishna and Carl Sagan ]. The computer graphics is used at an exact dosage,  so that only necessary events are shown involving graphics — I would have easily believed if they say it’s not graphics. The flight sequence and the subway sequences are masterpieces in the making front.

Thankfully the hero surrenders to the Mother Nature and science, instead of fighting against with laser guns :). The movie was a little bit dragging towards the end and become cliché typed. I don’t understand why any natural threat is plotted against Manhattan alone. Are we not living in the same planet? :)

A watchable n creepy science fiction thriller from Alex Proyas and Nicolas Cage.
