Few grams from the gold mine IV

    ir8

    Avatharam

The involvement of IR started like this. First, Nasser had shot the entire talkie portion of the film and showed it to IR [ Surrender ]. IR was impressed, agreed to fill up songs and do BGM.He sang all the songs [ எல்லா பாட்டும் நீங்க‌ளாவே ஸார்.. செய்ங்க‌ :) ]  The situation explained for ‘Thendral vandhu’ was — A blind girl [ yaaru.. Revathy girl..mela ] falls in love with his friend and get to know about the colors and their attributes. IR didn’t say anything. The song was written, composed and recorded. You know .. the final product was shown to Naaser.

    Technical part

The interviewer better not reveal his subject knowledge explicitly. Knowing carnatic music doesn’t mean they get the idea of film music entirely. Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen always.. IR generally answers in a spiritual fashion [ melerndhu vizhundhudu.. thaana varudhu ]. Sampath asked IR about the technical part — Which raaga do you use mostly, why did u play with Sruthi bedham, mayamalava gowla, shanmugapriya etc.,

IR started explaining it — Saameee… It was not Sruthi bedham but it was Graha bedham. He started singing the notes of ‘Sangeethame en dheivame’ and started explaining about sadjamam, rishabam, nishaabam, madhyamam, melagarthaa raagam, diatonic/chromatic modulations, pivot chords, notes and other high level music theories. Musinjindhu.. Sampath abruptly jumped into the next question :). [ ம‌ர‌பு தெரிஞ்சு புதுக்க‌விதை எழுத‌ற‌வ‌ங்க‌ அவ‌ங்க‌ ].

In another interview with Sreekumar in Malayalam, he asked Sreekumar to compose few tones and gave an illusion that anyone can compose. No.. it was not. It was their self defense to keep themselves humble.

    Ajoy Chakraborty

Isaiyil Thodangudhamma was classically sung by Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty [ Bade Bengali master ivaru ] in Hey Ram. I thought that Pandit got a friendship with IR during Hey Ram.. Not exactly. Even 10 years before hey Ram, Pandit and IR were friends. Pandit took IR to Calcutta Music academy. People were writing exams and Doyens of Carnatic music were doing the viva part. IR was impressed by the key question asked in the viva..What did you do in this song?

    Music compensates the lyrics ! [ இழுக்குடைய‌ பாட்டிற்கு இசைய‌ழ‌கு ]

Though I don’t agree with his idea, let me share what he said. He said music enhances the lines and gives life to it. He explained it with example — Take Sundari Kannaal oru sedhi and read the lyrics.. it’s very normal but he added that his music gave the life to the song. I can understand the clash between IR and VR now. It’s unfortunate that IR composed his music for meaningless lines and VR wasted his energy with Chandrabose during those days. IR allowed lyricists who can adjust the lines according to his notes. Of course, it’s his opinion.

Above all, the magical wonders he has done was more than enough for an entire generation. As I said, instead of looking at the creator, let’s enjoy the creation he did.

In a telugu interview he said this.. ” Adhigaa osthundhi.. nEn En chesedhi ??!! ” [ Coming by its own.. What do I do ].

    :)
    Toto.

    1. Enjoyed the series, hope you have not closed this here… IR was probably the only reason for me to see Tamil movies in an era that was full of lousy masala movies or over the top movies. Glad to see that things have changed a lot. I wish Raja makes another round, i am sure he will add to the revival that is happening in the Tamil Pix (!) Industry.

    2. Thank you so much Krishna.. No ! I won’t end up this series and will take again after some time. I would also be happy to see his return, which may not happen.. Could you recollect the last good number from him in Tamil film ? Adhu oru kana kaalam :) .. That’s the last movie he has some notable song which came almost 4 years back !!
