    Thamarai — Kavi Samurai

    Thamarai — Lady Bard !

Tamil film history has a rich list of lyricists but only males. Not even a single woman in the past. Also, there were magical combinations worked out, way back from Kannadasan [ with  many directors], KB-MSV-Kannadasan, Sridhar-MSV-Kanndasan, BRIR — Vairamuthu, Manirathnam — IR — Vaali, Manirathnam-ARR-Vairamuthu, Shankar-ARR-Vairamuthu, Selvaraghavan-YSR-Na.Muthukumar, BalajiSakthivel — Joshua Sridhar — Na.Muthukumar and Goutham-Harris Jayaraj– Thamarai. Out of all the lyricists and combinations, Thamarai is the first lady bard in Tamil film history and the combo remains one of all time favourites.

Thamarai — She hails from Coimbatore and she did her Mech Engg [ Goutham menon is a Mech Engr too - Trichy ! ].  Her father was a play-writer [ genes ! ]. After spending 7 years in the auto industry, she decided to get into song writing as a full time job. She moved to Chennai, worked in journals and got a break in Seemaan’s movie IniyavallE. Then one more song with Vikraman ‘Malligaipoove”. She struggled to get a place and hit jackpot [ luck is defined as preparation meeting opportunity ] when she wrote 3 songs in Minnale — Vaseegara is one among the three.

    tham2

Vaseegara took her to heights. That was the first song written by a woman, expressing the point of view of the heroine. Along with the most catchy tune of Harris, the song was repeatedly played. Though it was poorly picturised, the song became very well known and never boring. The similar song with superb picturisation was “Snehidhane” in Alaipayuthe.

The good thing about her is she doesn’t compromise neither to include words from other languages not to make double meaning lyrics. For this motto,  she lost the single song ‘Yethi Yethi’ in V1000 and of course, other works too. The second thing is that she uses the good old Tamil words from literature. Of course, there’s a full fledged pure Tamil song in Iruvar “Narumugaiye” written by Vairamuthu — no doubts; it’s fabulous !.  However, she does that in almost all of her songs. Even she writes in pure Tamil for a peppy song [ Karka karka, Karu Karu vizhigallaal, ] .. Vairamuthu did the same for the Tamil version of Fanaa — he wrote in pure Tamil for a perfect Disco-the song “Yaakai thiri.. kaadhal sudar”  [ yaakai — body ].

Let the creations speak more about her skills. When there’s a time you need English dictionary for Tamil songs, she changed the crowd to search for Tamil dictionaries.. I mean it.. For example, some interesting n rare Tamil words from her..

Some interesting lines from her lyrics..

The best albums in my opinion are “Pachaikili Muthucharam” and “Vaaranam 1000″.

    Happy listening.

    :)

    Toto.

    4. Visu,

@‘yakkai thiri” , i think u r referring to Auyudha Yezhuthu” which was the tamil version of ManiRatnam’s ’ hindi Yuva’… I listened to ‘Yakkai thiri’ only after reading about it there.i liked it but so were lot of ARR songs as well as Harris Jeyaraj songs.I liked Vairamuthu-ARR combo ‘Thiruda thiruda’ songs a lot and also couple of songs in the Srikkanth/Gopika starrer directed/produced by K.V Anand-“kana kandaen” for the lyrics.

Thamarai’s lyrics are sensational when u listen to the songs especially in the late night, when u r not hurrying up to office or reading a book/magazine, not concentrating on driving.… I appreciate ur ability to note so many words( i think 2 of the words have been discussed in the mails in our group prior to the birth of ur blog)..

    5. Thanks Rajan for the comments. KVAnand-Vidyasagar-Vairamuthu is another interesting team.. ” Moollai thirugum” is a good example.

    9. Thanks DP. Good to look for that combination back in work — IMO Thamarai shines less with ARR’s music.
