    Tranquil tunes..

This list is about the songs that were rendered slower than the usual pace [ also in low pitch ] and an ultra melody — like “Kanne Kalaimaane”. Slightly slower than the melody — slow in tune, voice and flow of the song [ Hariharan, Shankar mahadevan gangs don’t fit here ! ]. Don’t worry .. I’ll not start more series on other adjectives [ cool, hot, short, long.. ] :) Just gave a thought.

    tranq

    1. Paruvame [ SPB, SJanaki — Nenjathai Killathe ]

To start and get on track, I quote this superb song. It’s sightly slower than any regular song [ husky ! ] and singers sing in a slightly lower voice [ not whispering ! ]. I have never come across 2 friends jogging on screen, after this song. Picturisation at its best. Besides the easeful melody, I love the visuals of Ashokkumar — the pollution free Bangalore and mist covered Cubbon Bagh. I remember the early morning returns to home from majestic railway station, in the misty mornings with extreme chillness !

    2. Oh Paapa lali [ SPB — Geethanjali ]

I mean the Telugu version of the song and not the Mano version in Tamil [ it’s more mascular ! ]. You know the song.. I had the entire songs in a mini booklet form I used to memorise them, before I open the tution home work All my Telugu friends never accepted that Mano version of songs in Tamil were good at all. It’s somewhat closer in this category of relaxing songs.

    3. Thendrale [ Unnikrishnan — Kadhal Desam ]

Mathan used to introduce new songs to me — he was an alter ego for me living away, from parents in a single room with his own freedom in life. He used to buy the new cassettes and of course, immediately share the same with me. First time, he said about the Unni Krishnan song as the slowest song he has ever heard about. ]. A simple song can just be played with a piano and the voice .. Like SPB sung ‘Anjali Anjali ’ in ARR’s Dubai concert with just piano music. Unnikrishnan was clearly told to make the listener to sleep at the end of the song and he does it neatly !  The piano interludes are so soothing.

The idea of this song is not to raise the tone even when high pitch comes and play in a slow pace. It was a different experience. The other good song from Kadhal desam was Oh Vennilaa [ with high pitch — wonderful lyrics from vaali ].

    4. Thoda Thoda [ SPB, Chitra — Indira ]

This song is second base for this post. I got this cassette INDRA for the first time along with some Malaysian movie on the side B, through a Malayisian source. When every soul settled with “Nilaa kaaigirathu” song in this album, I was fascinated with the low pitch, softy voice of SPB. It’s like, he sings just for us or singing alone so that nobody else watches that. Classic of its kind. The lines were truly classic and slightly deviating from the usual Vairamuthu lyrics..

SPB once said that the flute in the first interlude was not the flute itself but the whistling sound of ARR !!  Tough to digest this titbit as wel as the junk picturisation of the song !

    5. Azhage sugamaa [ Srinivas, Sadhana Sargam — Parthale paravasam ]

This song is the basic idea of this series. This song expresses the loneliness and divide between couples, as softly as possible. Srinivas is the best in this category of songs and I feel this song is the best in this list. He begs, express pain, concerns, worries a lot in this song. The song reflects somethng they [ we !! ] missed greatly in the past.. We too wish the same, right ?! The piano n violin work in the background is too good. Such a calming n soft song. Check Srinivas’s flow when sings “pookkall thaan seraadhaaa “. Classic ! The song ends just like a great singer humming something during the endless end..

Singer Srinivas himself dserves a separate post for his songs like Kaalai arumbi [ Kanaa kanden ], Thiru Thiruda [5 Star ], keiyil midhakum kanavaa [ Ratchagan ].. Later the same Srinivas was asked to sing the beautiful tamil lyrics [ a bit ] in the beginning of Snehidhane song. He once slowly sang the piece with the beautiful lyrics.. “நேற்று முன்னிர‌வில் உன் நித்தில‌ப்பூ ம‌டியில். Bu sadly, he was asked to sing it in different pict [ hard !! ] so that [ nobody understands :) ] it contrasts the melodious flow of Sadhana sargam.

As usual, these are just seashells that I have picked up and the entire ocean is in front of us with unexplored abyss.

    Happy listening.

    :)
    Toto.

    1. Thanks for identifying and sharing these. I have not heard 3 and 5 and heard it now.

I did not like/prefer 3rd one — though the tune is melodious, IMO it is not captivating for some reason. Whereas the 5th one is really good…Esp the solo violin interludes is very good.

Heard once again Thoda Thoda — have heard it in the past. This is another masterpiece from ARR. Very brilliant melodious tune from him. Really like the verses — Idaiveli Thaandathae En Vasam Naanillai…Thanks for providing that as well.

      Thanks

      Venkat

    2. hey toto

paruvame song and thoda thoda song are my favorite ones
oh papa laali makes me more soogam
I dont know where u get these concepts — very nice try
      bye

    3. Thanks Venkat and it’s my pleasure.. In a way, I agree with you about Thendrale song.. but this song was magic when it was released [ the initial days of ARR ]. You are right about the violin.. In fact, there are 2 versions of this song [ one with SS starting the 1st stanza and the other one with Srinivas starting ] — they both have slight variations in the interludes and in lyrics. Both are good ! Pls try both.

Thanks Nishu.. One more perspective :) ..” Idhellaam appdiye varradhu ” as Kamal says in MMKR. Ha..ha.

      • In fact I like “Oo Vennila.…” from the same movie. Even now, I do listen to it once in a while. It will appear as if he is singing from his heart.…

Secondly, regarding that MMKR dialog — “idhallam appadiye Varrradhu dhaan illa” — I have used it so many times — in so many situations.… nice one…

        Thanks

        Venkat
