Vasundharavum, Mathanum pinne Nyaanum

vas

Being in Chennai, coming across a celebrity in places is not new to me. I remember seeing SV Shekar in VGP when we had been there for an excursion in 3 std [ azudhu adam panni ponen ] and the latest was director Vishnuvardhan in Sathyam for ICE Age 3. At later stages, I come across most of the TV artists and cine artists in my friend’s studio.

For the first time, an artist attracted me both as an actress [ model might be the right word ! ] and as a singer. She is stunningly beautiful and has one of the most peppy voices [ like Shruthi hassan ]. My favorite song of her is ‘Colorful Nilavu’ from Doubles — what a sparkling voice !

On a cloudy Sunday in Banglore [ 6 years back ! ], I got a call from my friend that he has come to Bangalore for a show — his other friends do event management. I met him in the noon.“And We Had a Talk” [ Remember ‘How to name it?’ ] is the usual phrase I use about our chat. Then he asked me to wait in the auditorium to watch the rehearsals. I was reluctant to watch — but I didn’t make the valuable mistake of missing it.

There came the girl Vasundhara Das [ Jeans and Black Kurtha — rommba mukkyam :) ] along with 6 dancers for rehearsal. I couldn’t believe it — It was just the event management crew, sound engineers and just us in the large n empty auditorium [ Ambedkar Bhavan ]. They started the rehearsals. It was not the music troop rehearsal where they make repeated sounds but it was Karaoke. The songs she sang were

1. Shakkalaka baby — Mudhalvan
2. Colourful Nilavu — Doubles
3. Chandralekha — Thiruda Thiruda
4. Sohni Sohni — Meri Jaan album
5. Hai hai Like you — Citizen [ Citizen Kane maadiri vandhirukka vendiay padam.. Citizen Kenai maadiri vandhudhu :) ].

and some more..

The idea was.. she has to sing the song and the dance group dances behind her. The dancers group was really good [ inneram purinjirukanume :) ].I always feel happy to hear peppy songs in a real good music system. The sound that stage produced was too good. Think about the quality of ARR live performances. He once performed the song Chandaa Suraj Laako thaare live in Dubai [ the origin of Poraale Ponnuthaaye ] along with the recorded voice of Ustaad Nausrat fateh ali khan. The sync was perfect. Check it in youtube.

The sound effects in her rehearsal were mind blowing and her magical voice was enchanting . That too, I was watching it live. The range of her voice is amazing — it ascends to high pitch and stays/traverses there fluidly without any hitches. That’s the power of practice they make [ Thanks to Krishna — 10000 hrs of practice as said in Outliers — Malcolm Gladwell :) ]. Also, they were concerned much with the quality of sound and made a lot of corrections for betterment [ though it makes no difference to us in the audience front ]. We along with the technical crew applauded the show. Game over.

I was speechless by the best treat I ve got from my friend — too much for a Sunday afternoon. Mathan told me that in the evening he would be busy with the show and asked watch it along with the crowd. I didn’t want to spoil the memorable experience by attending the actual show along with the crowd [ Sakkathu figure Kano Avllu :) ]. Of course, evening I watched Hey Ram in SUN.

“We do not remember days; we remember moments -  Cesare Pavese” [ especially if a girl is involved ;) ].

  1. Lucky Mann.……!
as far as looks, I like Vasundara..even if she does not have the traditional shape expected of an indian beauty(konjam cylindrical). ever since i watched her in Hey Ram, i liked her.i watched her interview in Asia Net long time back(6 years).., she was so down to earth, with almost no make up. her confidence was amazing.

by the way, first time hearing about Colourful Nilavu.
was this from a comdey movie which flopped in Tamil?
    saytaraj or Karthik?
any way, let me hear it once… and then comment.

  2. Toto,

It was interesting to read. Her voice is kind of very different. the one I liked is Vaseegara…

You were lucky to see a rehearsal…

Thanks for getting that to us.

    Venkat

  3. i saw her in a movie theater in Pune recently (some 6 months ago); she was with an elderly couple (probably her parents); i could not believe that a girl who has accomplished (acted as kamal’s heroine!) was there with a middle class looking couple and behaved like a normal girl next door.

  4. My to-do list increases, will listen to her songs to appreciate your artcle better. Very well written as always. Keep up the good work.

  5. hey
    ur article was too good
u madrasis r lucky enough to meet celebrities
that too vasundara das — her voice is surely unusual
    thank u for ur blog
    bye

  6. Rajan.. Thanks. “Doubles” had Prabhudeva, Meena and Sangeetha.

Venkat.. Thanks.. Vaseegara was sung by Bombay Jayashri

Krishna.. Thanks.. She tried to settle in Mumbai but returned back and settled in Bangalore.

    Thanks to Irshad and Nishu.

  7. Hi Toto

I think she sung this song…

Yeh yeh enna achu unakku.…puthusaga parvaigal ethuku.….

.….cell phonegalai marandhavan vendum.…suya buthiyil vazhbavan vendummm

Also another song is from Boys.….

She has created a niche for herself.…Once when I was on a trip to cochin…A group of colleagues hired a large boat and went on a cruise from Vallarpadam to Fort-Cochin.….in between there is Bolghatty Palace(Island).….She was giving a live concern there.….we had a chance to see and listen from a distance.….that was my closest brush.……

  8. Thanks Kathir.. You are right.. It’s a meaninful song [ dangerous ! ] :). But she didn’t continue singing much in Tamil.. Vetti trivia.. Deva mixed her voice with another local singer Ganga in a midnight song from Kushi.. ha..ha. :)
